Barrister Aisha Kalil Wakkil is a lawyer and human rights activist with the National Human Rights Commission. It has been reported that, at least 20 Boko Haram Islamic fighters were killed by Chadian soldiers in a battle on Friday while the terrorist group attacked a village on the river bank of Lake Chad. The military source reported that two of their members were also killed by the insurgencies during the gun battle. After the Nigerian Army confirmed that 50 persons were killed in the two separate bomb blast at Eid prayer ground Damaturu, Yobe, on Friday morning. Another report disclosed that the death toll reaches 65 souls killed by the boko haram suicide bombers. A statement issued on Friday in Abuja by the Acting-Director of Army Public Relations, Col. Sani Usman, said that the explosions occurred at screening areas of the Eid prayer ground. The Commanding Officer, 72 Special Forces Battalion in Makurdi, Timothy Lagbaja, has said that the battalion lost 28 soldiers to insurgency in the North-East and in Benue. Mr. Lagbaja, a colonel, told newsmen in Makurdi on Wednesday that between 2012 and 2015, the battalion lost four officers and eight soldiers to the Tiv/Fulani and Agatu crises in Benue. He said the remaining 16 were lost to insurgency in the North-East, while many others who sustained degrees of injuries were either flown abroad or treated in the country. The commander said the battalion alone had deployed about 500 soldiers to serve in the special security outfit `Operation Zenda’ to maintain internal security in the state. According to him, the effort is paying off as weapons hitherto in the hands of wrong people have been recovered. He said that the high criminality in the state had been reduced to “few isolated cases of killings’’.

The Boko Haram insurgencies have not calm down as they went on rampage in some communities in the northeast states of Borno and Yobe, killing over 43 people. Monguno, the country home of Maj-Gen. Babagana Monguno, who was yesterday named as the new National Security Adviser (NSA) to President Mohammadu Buhari, was among the raided communities. Borno State Police Commissioner Aderemi Opadokun,who confirmed the fresh attacks, said the victims were either felled by gunshots, or had their throats slashed by the insurgents.
