12. Isis: Model and fashion designer Isis King appeared on the 11th and 17th cycles of "America's Next Top Model." She was the first trans woman to compete on the series. Isis, 30, had sexual reassignment surgery in 2009. She appeared in the MSNBC documentary "Born in the Wrong Body," which centered on the lives of transgender teenagers.

11. Ian: Comedian Ian Harvie (far left) often talks about being a trans man in his stand-up performances. Born and raised in Maine, Harvie knew he was transgender at an early age and came out as transgender at age 32. Harvie, 46, is a writer's room consultant and actor on Amazon's critically acclaimed series "Transparent."

10. Janet: Journalist Janet Mock, 31, was formerly a staff editor at People magazine and is a transgender rights activist and author. She currently hosts "So POPular!" on MSNBC. At age 18, Mock traveled to Thailand and had sexual reassignment surgery. She revealed she was a trans woman in an interview with Marie Claire in 2011 and published the bestselling memoir "Redefining Realness: My Path to Womanhood, Identity, Love & So Much More" in 2014.

8. Andreja: Australian model Andreja Pejic is a transgender woman, who was originally considered an "androgynous" male model who described himself as living "in between genders." She had sexual reassignment surgery in 2014. Pejic, 23, told People magazine in July, 2014: "I always dreamt of being a girl. One of my earliest memories is spinning around in my mom's skirt trying to look like a ballerina."

9. Jenna: Canadian model and TV personality Jenna Talackova made headlines in 2012 when she got permission to compete in Miss Universe Canada as a trans woman. She had previously competed in an international pageant for transgender and transsexual women in Thailand.

Jenner: Former Olympic champion-turned-reality star Bruce Jenner admitted during an interview with Diane Sawyer in April, 2015, that he was transitioning from male to female.  "For all intents and purposes, I'm a woman," he confessed. Jenner, 65, continued, "People look at me differently. They see you as this macho male, but my heart and my soul and everything that I do in life - it is part of me. That female side is part of me. That's who I am."

6. Lana: Filmmaker Lana Wachowski was born Larry Wachowski and reportedly had gender reassignment surgery after "Speed Racer" in 2008. Several years earlier, photos had surfaced of Wachowski in women's attire, hairstyles and features that appeared to have been softened as a result of hormone therapy. Wachowski, 49, officially came out as a woman during the promotion of "Cloud Atlas" in 2012.

5. Alexis: Born Robert Arquette, Alexis Arquette grew up in an acting family alongside sisters Rosanna and Patricia and brother David. She appeared in a groundbreaking same-sex marriage episode of "Roseanne" and won an Outstanding Actor in a Feature Film from Outfest for her work as a gay painter searching for inspiration in the indie "Never Met Picasso." Arquette, 45, has played a gay soap opera writer who reunites with college chums in the genial "I Think I Do" and appeared as Adam Sandler's Boy George-inspired bandmate in "The Wedding Singer."

4. Tom Gabel: In May, 2012, Against Me! rocker Tom Gabel revealed he dealt with gender dysphoria privately for years and was transitioning to become a woman named Laura Jane Grace. At the time of his disclosure, he planned to remain married to wife Heather. Gabel  explained, "For me, the most terrifying thing about this was how she would accept the news. But she's been super-amazing and understanding."

3. Chaz Bono: Chaz was born Chastity Sun Bono and was the only child born to entertainers Sonny Bono and Cher. Bono began his gender transition from female to male in 2009, and his legal transition was completed the following year. During TV special "Becoming Chaz," Bono, 46, revealed he had become an addict after the cancer death of his lesbian lover and he wanted to end his existence as a woman.

2. Candis Cayne: Before Laverne Cox, there was actress Candis Cayne --  the first transgender actress to play a recurring transgender character in prime time in the ABC series "Dirty Sexy Money."  She played a trans woman who had an affair with a married New York attorney (William Baldwin) from 2007-08. Cayne told the "Today" show in 2007: "You know, when I started my transition 10 years ago, I kind of came to realization that I probably wouldn't work anymore, which was really heartbreaking for me because it's my passion and I love it.

1. Laverne Cox: Laverne Cox is mostly known for her role on the Netflix prison drama " Orange Is The New Black ." She plays transgender inmate Sophia Burset and was the first openly transgender person to earn an Emmy nomination. Cox, 30, got her big break as the first transgender contestant on Sean "Diddy" Combs' reality show "I Want To Work For Diddy." She has also appeared on "Law & Order."
