U.S. President Barack Obama on Wednesday informed Congress he is sending up to 300 U.S. military personnel to Cameroon, the White House said, part of a stepped-up effort by Washington to counter the violent group Boko Haram. An advance force of 90 U.S. military personnel has arrived in Cameroon, an administration official said on condition of anonymity. The forces will be conducting airborne intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance operations, the official said, adding they would be armed for their own protection. Obama notified House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, in a letter. The White House released the letter Wednesday. U.S. personnel began deploying on Monday under an arrangement with the Cameroon government. A total of up to about 300 U.S. service members could be sent. They will be armed to provide their own protection and security and will stay in Cameroon until they are no longer needed. Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom has announced that the State has accessed the bailout funds from the Central Bank of Nigeria, and payment of the backlog of salaries to workers of the State Government is to commence immediately. Governor Ortom who announced this today in Abuja, disclosed that a committee had been set up to handle the disbursement of the funds to workers without delay. The committee which is headed by the Deputy Governor, Engr Benson Abounu also has Secretary to the State Government, Barrister Targema Takema and the State Head of Service, Adaikwu Inwata. Other members of the committee are the State Commissioner for Finance, representatives of academic and non-academic staff unions of the state owned tertiary institutions as well as representatives of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC and the Trade Union Congress TUC, Benue State chapters. Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom has maintained that he will not probe former Governor George Akume despite calls by some individuals and groups to do so. Former Governor, Gabriel Suswam who was on Monday a guest at the Economics and Financial Crimes Commission, (EFCC) over allegations of corruption and embezzlement, had specifically appealed to Ortom that the probe of his administration to be extended to Akume's regime stating that it would give a better perspective into the challenges he faced while serving as Governor between 2007 and 2015. The Governor has however said he did not take over from Akume hence it'll be inappropriate for him to probe the Senator.
