Opinion: I am Not Surprise if Senator Akume is Indicted

When I heard that the immediate past crook, selfish and ruthless governor of Benue State, Gabriel Suswam, implicated Senator Akume, in the ongoing interrogation upon him by the men of EFCC due to the charges of corruption against him, I was not surprised and I will never be, due to the fact that Senator Akume too is another corrupt elite.

Senator George Akume ruled Benue State as the governor for good eight years, after which he contested for the senator and won, according to the so called INEC at that time. Akume was the one that even installed Gabriel Suswam as the governor of the state in order to cover his frauds while in the office. However, if Suswam has decided to reveal impious activities of his boss (Senator Akume) now, so be it.

However, in case you are not aware, when Akume won senatorial race in 2007 and became the senator to represent Zone B from Benue State at National Assembly, he further contested for the position of Senate President against distinguished Senator David Mark but failed.

The issue to be noted here is this; Akume bribed all the senators in the house with Fifty Million Naira each in order to buy their support and make him their Senate President. Calculate or rather; multiply Fifty million naira by 109 Senators that we have at the National Assembly and you will get N5,450,000,000 (Five billion, four hundred and fifty million naira).

That was the amount of money Akume used and bribed his colleagues so that they should vote for him as their Senate President.

Now, the question to be asked is this; was the money part of Akume's salary and allowances as the governor for eight years or the Benue money that was budgeted for some projects in the state but not executed and diverted into his personal account? Therefore, Akume's action to bribe his colleagues has shown how desperate he was in becoming the senate president.

Another question to be asked is this; Akume's ambition of becoming the senate president that necessitated his action of using Five Billion, Four Hundred And Fifty Million Naira to bribe senators, was it for his own interest or public interest?

It would interest you to know that during Akume's era as the governor of the state, so many contracts were awarded but not executed and the money was paid. Who paid the money? To who's account? For what?

The time for Senator Akume to answer questions, threatening the sensitivity of the Benue people and beyond is now, the time to put immunity aside and allow justice to prevail is now, the time to hold our leaders accountable is now, the time to monitor and watch our leaders with keen interest is now, the time to collectively fight the corrupt leaders and push them out of governance is now, the
time to make our leaders work for the public interest and not for their selfish interest is now,
the time to get things right in this country is now.

The rule of law that state that everybody is equal before the law and nobody is above the law should be allowed to function now, the war against indiscipline, corruption and bad leadership should be initiated now, the death penalty for the corruption leaders can end the corruption in the country and the time to make it a law and enforce it is now.
