Strike Looms in BSU as Government Fails to Honour Agreement
All the unions in Benue State University including the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Non-academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU) and Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) are gearing up to down tools over the failure of the state government to honour the agreement reached over the payment of earned allowances to their members.
The agreement was part of the negotiations that led to the end of the 5 month strike by ASUU and other unions earlier in the year.
In the agreement, the government promised to pay the 6 years earned allowances owed the workers in 6 installments beginning from October 2015, while ensuring continual payment of monthly salaries and earned allowances.
However, our correspondent gathered that as at last week when the workers received their October 2015 salaries, the government had not just failed to pay the first installment of the arrears of earned allowances, they also didn't pay those for October 2015.
Speaking to our correspondent, one of the lecturers who wouldn't like his name to be mentioned said this development was unfortunate and could result in yet another strike action.
"The government has neither commenced the agreement nor have they paid earned allowances for October across all the unions in the university. The is spells trouble and the earlier they resolved this, the better for them."
He said all these were without an official letter from the government to the union and that they were bidding time to receive an official explanation from the government or an industrial action will be inevitable.
