A report revealed by the federal government of Nigeria disclosed that, Boko Haram terrorist group have device a new tactics to attack innocent Nigerians. Information released by the minister of interior said the deadly sect are currently taking advantage of the unending feud between herders and farmers to attack, kill and destroy innocent Nigerians.
The terrorist group disguise themselves as Fulani herdsmen while attacking and terrorize Nigerians mostly in the Niger-Benue river basin area, and spreads to the South-East and Western Nigeria.
According to Abdulrahaman Dambazau, the minister of interior who disclosed this in Abuja at the opening ceremony of a stakeholders meeting on pastorialists/sedentary farmers conflict in Nigeria on Thursday, April 14. Dambazau noted that the persistent crisis between farmers and herders have grave implications on Nigeria’s internal security.
He said the conflict occurs mostly in the Niger-Benue river basin area, and spreads to the South-East and Western Nigeria. “Indications are that there are opportunistic criminal angles to the conflict in the nature of cattle-rustling, armed robbery and kidnapping. “A further objective is to identify laws and regulations that impact on the conflict. This will in turn inform the design of a definitive policy intervention which will see multi-level, convergent action that will in turn lead to an abatement of this conflict, the minister said.
He stressed that stakeholders should also consider the larger West and Central African region in arriving at an understanding of the Niger-Benue Basin as an arena of conflict because pastoralists converge seasonally to graze their cattle in the area.
Bassey Akpanyung, the permanent secretary in the ministry said it was high time something was done to end the farmers/herders’ conflict which has claimed many lives and property worth millions of naira.
Meanwhile, reports have emerged that about 100,000 persons have been displaced from their ancestral homes in areas of Benue state due to the ongoing crisis between Fulani herdsmen and farmers. Boniface Otese, the executive secretary of the Benue state emergency management agency (SEMA), who made this known on Thursday, April 14, in Makurdi, said about 12,000 families have been affected by the mayhem.
